Following three years of historic wildfire destruction — including the record-shattering 2023 season that burned roughly 15 million hectares — 2026 is shaping up to be another difficult year for Canada.

Healthy spring rainfall gave much of the country a slower start than 2023 or 2025. But long-range forecasts point to intense summer heat and below-normal rainfall through August, and fire danger ratings have been climbing steadily across the Prairies, northwestern Ontario, and the B.C. Interior since late June.

Here is where the wildfire situation stands today — and what four consecutive severe seasons mean for the people who live in fire country.

How fire danger is measured

Fire danger across Canada is calculated from several factors — temperature, humidity, wind speed, and recent rainfall. Those ratings help provincial agencies decide how to prioritise existing fires, where to pre-position crews and aircraft, and when to implement burn bans and forest closures.

Right now, the highest concentrations of out-of-control fire are in northern Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and northwestern Ontario, with a second cluster building in the B.C. Interior as the July heat arrives.

The smoke doesn't stay local

Smoke from active Canadian wildfires doesn't just affect the communities closest to the flames. Under the right winds, it drifts thousands of kilometres — settling over the most populated corridors of southern Ontario and Quebec, and crossing the border into the U.S. eastern seaboard, where cities like New York and Chicago have repeatedly recorded some of the worst air quality in the world during Canadian fire seasons.

Wildfire smoke poses real health risks. On the Air Quality Health Index, a reading of seven or higher is considered high risk — the general population, regardless of pre-existing conditions, is advised to reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activity, and vulnerable groups should stay indoors with windows closed.

The Prodigy Take

Four severe seasons in a row. This is why permanent protection matters.

Step back from the daily numbers and one pattern stands out: severe seasons are no longer the exception. 2023 was the worst on record. 2025 was the second worst. 2024 and 2026 are both running well above the long-term average. Four consecutive years of this is not an anomaly — it is the new operating environment.

The second pattern is quieter but just as important: suppression resources are finite. When 170 fires burn out of control at once, crews and aircraft are triaged toward the fires threatening the most people. Individual homes on rural roads, lakeside properties, and small communities at the end of a single highway are exactly the places that wait longest for help — and where evacuation orders come earliest.

That is why the conversation among fire agencies, insurers, and homeowners is shifting from response to permanent protection. Seasonal sprinkler protection units already save entire towns — Logan Lake, B.C. recorded 100% structure survival in 2021 with them deployed. A permanently installed exterior suppression system applies the same proven physics to a single property: saturating the home and the ground around it before embers arrive, working whether or not anyone is home, and continuing to protect long after the household has safely evacuated.
